I just got a job but it seems sketchy?

I just got accepted for a position with a company called J.G. Associates. When I went to the interview today there was no sign for thier office space, and the interviewer's office seemed bare except for a desk and minimal things on it. She wouldn't tell much at all and said it would all be explained Saturday at orientation....my gut says don't do it but I don't know....there is no valid website to speak of and we can't trace the number I called (it only says land line.) What does everyone think?

I did give them my SS# because that is what you do when you noramlly apply for jobs...what do I do?!?

It is some sort of horrible sales job. Or they will require you to pay money upfront. Or it is some other kind of scam.

In all my years I have never seen a company like this that is legitimate. If you go to "orientation" on Saturday take someone with you and be prepared for the bullsh** to be deep.

I hope you haven't given these people your social security number yet. You might want to do yourself a favor and call your state income tax (or employee withholding) division and find out if this company is registered to hire employees or remit state taxes.

Good luck.

Vacuum sales are not a scam, but 100% commission and 95% of the people never make a dime. The other 5% though make great money. Report It

I would denfinitely carry some kind of weapon in your purse, just in case.

I'm wondering how you can possibly even interview for a job that you don't know what the job entails. Certain not specifics but in generalities...I mean would you bother interviewing for a job as a Neurosurgeon if you barely graduated high school????

And what qualifications do you have that caused them to hire you? Were you breathing?

Sounds to me like a scam.

Probably, not a real job. Could be contract work on commission or MLM.

Sounds PERFECT!

Hey, when they tell you to get in the trunk of the car, so they can take to meet the "customers" - DO IT!

Seriously - RUN AWAY! Run fast, run far, run AWAY!

No sign, no phone number, won't tell you anything.

The only "position" with this company is SUCKER.

Can't hurt to check it out. If it sounds sketchy during orientation, you can always leave.

SCAM! Its going to be a job where you earn commissions while walking around mall parking lots trying to sell crap that no one wants to people who will turn you down time after time... Dont waste your time. They suckered me once with the same crap. Hey - at least you were observant enough to realize something was wrong...I actually got fooled. Finally figured it out after they drove me 40 miles away, told me to get out of the car with another guy, who was going to "show me the ropes"... Count yourself lucky.

Always go with your gut. ALWAYS. I don't know if would hurt to go to the orientation to further confirm your instincts, though. There may be something "not quite right" going on, but you will not know that until you get there. Don't commit to anything until that sketchy feeling is completely gone. It might just be that they are a new company and just building (ie no website available, trace on the phone).

Was there an investment? If so, back out now and get your money back (which you'd be lucky if you could)... those are almost always sketchy.

Please just go with your gut. You are right to listen to it -- there are a lot of scams out there. I hope like heck you didn't give them any personal information like your SS#. Another good idea would be to check them out on the Better Business Bureau website (www.bbbonline.org). If there are any complaints against them, you can find them there. But beware, not all scams are reported - and not all companies are members (which doesn't mean they are bad - but most reputable companies make a point of being a member).

Again, go with your gut! There is more to it being just a feeling. Good luck if you pursue it, but approach it with caution and skepticism.

It might be a scam. If you can't verify the legitimacy of the company, don't let them have your social security number or driver's license information. You could end up the victim of identity theft.

It's also likely that it's a really crappy job and they need the person holding the orientation to sell you on it. I once went to a "group interview". The guy was good...in less than half an hour, I had been convinced that I had what it took to make good money selling cutlery and that giving these people $250 was an investment that I'd see a great return on. Lucky for me, I didn't bring any money with me. As soon as I walked out of the building, I realized that it was a pyramid scheme that I would never make money on.

Trust your gut. I would suggest that you continue to interview with other companies. And I highly recommend that you stay away from any job that requires you to pay to get started.

If you doubt it is a legit company, then I say skip the orientation. It is probably a sales thing.
