Old Smithfied Market now under threat of demolition.?

It seem that the Main structure (the central building), of the old Smithfield Meat Market in London is now under threat of demolition and redevelopment into yet more glass and concrete office space.

I realise that we can't preserve everything, and there has to be some change to the face of London, but buildings such as these are part of London's history and represent the nations heritage. Few other countries are able to offer such tangible evidence of their past through its historic buildings as Britain has, and of course these buildings have, and still do, provide a substantial draw for tourism. Should we not therefore try to preserve as much of our historic heritage as possible?

Agree with you on that. I have many good memories of traipsing past Smithfield market early in the morning on my way home from some club or another and it's one of those rare places in London that has a real bit of character about it. I'm sick to death of all the vacuous, soulless buildings that have gone up over the last few years. We should be preserving areas like this, not turning them into more bleedin' yuppie neighbourhoods with Starbucks and Costa coffee on every corner. It's not right!

well said Elvis. these days there isn't any places left that hold memories its all new buildings that look like they are built of Lego bricks, even where i live now they are chopping down all the old trees that have been there for years, just to build flats and apartments etc

Nostalgic reasons.....If Only....?

heritage should deam it as a grade 2 listed building that would stop the rot.

Demolition contractors can salvage architectural pieces so that they can be re-utilized on the future buildings. Not all buildings have to be completely demolished as sometimes the structural members are in good shape. In that case interior gutting of the building and the facade can be removed and then the building can be refitted out.
