How do I begin finishing my basement?

I just need one small room to feel comfortable enough for an office space. The area I want to finish is already a separate room. The basement looks really really old. Built in 1900. The floor is concrete with a slope in the corner where there is a drain. But there's no leakage down there. The ceiling is about 7 feet tall with the pipes and wires and cobwebs and stuff. The walls are brick. What do I do? How do I find out how to do it, and most of all, how much is it gonna cost me?

first put foam isulation on... glue it.....then stud walls floor to cieling, run wiring, cable, tle, speaker wire, gas line for fireplace, then isulate and sheet rock, texture then paint then add your favorite trim...and lights..

You need to start with knowing what your bldg. codes are. Then make a plan for your room...( what types of material you want to use for a finished look). Get some bids from general contractors and pick their brains. This should give you a good start.

First off make sure there is no moisture,if there is seal the walls with a sealent from your hardware store . 2nd insulate the ceiling for two resaons 1,heating, 2nd noise. You want a quite room.3rd float your floor towards the drain. This will help when laying tile or carpet. a hardware store will explain this for you. Run electrical wires and boxes,also internet wires. a electrian must hook it to the fuse box, you can run the wires to save money. This is about the best way to start and save money. If your walls are all straight you can get some simple wood panels and use liquid nails to put them up.This is very cheap and easy to do yourself.As for the floors I would go with carpet squares. Easy to lay and if you get a stain you pull up the bad tile and replace with a new one.They are already glued on the back of each tile..That is your cheap but working office space.
