Profiteering in Non Profits?

I've been involved with homeless issues for 20 years. Here in California I have noticed the same people on the staff of different organizations with no other source of income and they seem to be doing well. I raised the issue at a function that there are hundreds of organizations just in CA that are doing the exact same thing in the same communities or CA as a whole. I commented if just 25% of them merged their efforts tens of millions of dollars would be saved on staffing and office space, mailings etc. and could then be better spent on the cause we are fighting for. affordable housing and anti NIMBYism. By the look on their faces you'd think I had just kicked their dogs. A few lame responses came my way and then the subject was changed. I don't work with the money aspect I am just an advocate for the homeless and working poor and I write speeches. If anyone can help me get some straight answers I would appreciate it as 4000 children just in my city slept on the streets last night.

You can also access thier 990 tax forms and see the state of their finances.

Do a google search for "990 search" and you will find the information you seek.

See my question on how can nonprofit groups make "profits" and sometimes large ones. See some of the answers. They don't want to merge because each has it's little empire and power.

The staff would become part of the homeless statistic if you stopped paying them.

I would argue that the quality of work would be better with paid employment...

I have found from working with other organizations that most do not want to give up control of their organization nor do they want to merge with another inspite of both having the same goals and initiatives.
