When you buy a new software package, why does it state the minimum RAM and hard drive space your computer must have for you to run this program?

If your computer does not have RAM, what types of files will you be unable to open, and why?

You need RAM to run programs. RAM is random access memory and is used solely at random. If a program requires more ram than you have to give then it will either run very poorly - think choppy images and sound -- or it will not run at all.

You need ample amount of hard drive space for the permanent storage of the program. It must have a place to reside waiting for you to use it.

So hard drive usage is more permanent and ram usage is more temporary.

Most people will tell you to spend the max $$ you can afford (I'm not saying if you see the exact same configured computer at one store for $500.00 & the other for $700.00 to purchase the $700)

Right now the biggest single drive that is sold is 750 Gigs. Most already configured computers do not come with this size drive.

If you buy a program that your computer doesn't have enough ram to handle, then usually the program will tell you at installation that you need more & won't let you install it.

Most people will say that you should have almost double the ram in order to run a program. This is mainly due to if running something with the minimum the program will usually take longer to respond to what you type or click on.

Also they will say that you cannot have too much disk space.
