How can I remove mold from my basement?

The mold is black and covers large areas of the cement walls. The corners are almost solid black. We placed an office chair we weren't using in the basement about a month ago when we first moved in; the fabric seat and back of the chair have since grown a greenish, fuzzy-looking mold. I don't want to store anything else in the basement until I can figure out a way to either get rid of the mold or make sure it doesn't grow on everything! I also do not wish to waste an entire basement's worth of storage space. The space does not have good ventilation and this is a house we are renting. Any advice?

Mold loves moist air in dark conditions. Dehumidfy the air. Bring in some UV lights.

This sounds like a potentially serious situation. You may want to ensure the molds that you have are not the life threatening kinds. That have mold test kits available at some Home Depot stores.

Setup the dehumidifier to drain by hose into a floor drain or sump pump hole. That way it can run continuously. (Or at least not stop while waiting for someone to empty the bucket.)

Mold can spread to attics and interior walls. Better get this problem solved.

Good luck.

clean with bleach then put a dehumidifier down there

Try bleach, bleach can kill the mold, then use a dehumidifier. Then you need to find the source of the mold...

Clorox and a dehumidifier

call a professional, did u know some mold is so toxic it can cause death?

tilex or some other bleach-containing stuff.

don't buy the knock-offs, though; my cousins bought some and i tried to clean mold off the wall with it, and i swear after the tenth hose down, it hadn't removed anything.

YOu need to call the owner. Black mold can make you VERY sick, and you need professionals to remove it. That chair might be beyond repair now. We just had to have our entire bathroom ripped out and rebuilt because of black mold. It was making me very sick. It ALL has to be removed to ensure it doesn't grow back, even one spore will make it come back. Also, a dehumidifier down there would help keep it from growing back...you need to keep it very dry. Call your landlord, this will be an expensive job and it can effect your health.

you can use bleach to scrub it off the walls.
find out where the down spouts are draining to, if they are running right down the side of the house instead of away from it the water might be directed right to the basement.
get a dehumidifier to help dry out the basement. open any windows and set up fans to help circulate the air.
don't put any paint or sealer on the walls, it will just hold in the moisture and eventually the paint will bubble out.
basement walls are ment to 'breath' a little so it's okay to feel a little coolness from the walls.
if you are renting, see what your land lord is willing to do, maybe they will pay for the material if you do the work.

white vinegar which also cleans germs in the air. the put cool mist down there add 2 table spoons of white vinegar per gallon. set it to kick on when it needs to. this will keep germs out f the air and hopefully you want get sick
