Which is better: Memory sticks or CDs? |
I want to make copies of my Excel spreadsheet files and my Word files, firstly to free up space on my hard drive, secondly so that I will have a backup if my computer crashes, and thirdly so that I will be able to access the files from both my office laptop and my office desktop. Are there any relative advantages / disadvantages of Memory Sticks and CDs? I hope this is not a stupid question, but I have never used either. Honestly the BEST thing to do is this. Both have pros and cons. I would backup to both and store them in different places. theres both cons but I would pick a memory stick if both of ur pc can support USB memory stick...i will say better go for it..it's cheap easy and save time... I think you should use memory sticks because you can reuse memory sticks and they will not break easily like a cd I've lost 3 memory sticks, so for me its CDs! Also, CDs will store stuff more permanently, typically hold more data, and are more stable than memory sticks. burn cds, they are cheaper. answer:mem stick Not much really, both can be damaged, data can become corrupt, especially if a CD is subjected to and environment that damages the dye's ability to reproduce the data. a memory stick Well cd's hold 70mb and memory sticks can hold much more and are very portable. If you're backing up your computer why don't you add a new hard drive in your computer or buy a usb hard drive. Disadvantages to cds are they are easily damaged and may need more than you would for memory sticks. Also cds are one time only (unless it's a cd/rw) and memory stick can be wiped and reused very easily. hope this helps memory sticks are easier to transfer documents to multiple computers. To back up lots of files, cds would be better cuz you can easily jst store them and they are cheaper than memory sticks. For what you want, it sounds like you should use a memory stick. If you have more than a couple gb that you want to back up, you might want an external hard drive. for long term storage of files that will not be modified i would use CD's, if you plan to use them as mobile copies then it would be better to keep 2 copies so that it isnt the end of the world if the everyday copy gets lost or damaged. If it is purely to make backup copies which is good practice, CDs are fine, but do it on CDRWs so that you can re-use time and time again. However, like in my case I use lots of different computers and need most of my data handy all the time, I save everything to memory sticks and back up on various computers - i.e. the other way round to you. I find memory sticks more flexible because not every computer can take the type of CDs I use. Also, CDs are ROM and if I find when putting a CD in another computer that I want to amend a file I can't, whereas with memory sticks, its no problem. What suits one person might not necessarily suit another. As you work more on a computer you will find what is right for you. I would use DVDs for Backup as they can hold more Data than CDs. Memory sticks but, if possible use both |
