The idea of couch surfing is growing more and more popular.

There are millions of people out there ready to meet travelers by offering them a couch, spare room, mattress, or tent space for up to a week (though usually not more than three nights in one place) for FREE. You may even meet hosts which throw in a couple of free home-cooked meals and a tour around the city, though anything above a place to crash for free is just a bonus.

Not only does this way save money, but it helps to give you a genuine local experience when in a foreign country. Here are just two of the many websites which offer a couch surfing database. Use at your own risk:

(you need to sign up to look at accomidations for this last one, but they have a huge selection and even offer emergency couch hosts for when your origanal plan doesn't work out)
