Should I have a college roommate or not?

I am going to be attending college in the fall, and I was wondering what would be the best.

I am very into music, but I can always just listen to my iPod with headphones, but on that note, I also play guitars and drums (meaning I do little tapping noises which I know is a bad quirk). I write a lot of music as well, so I record from home.

Other then that, I am a very social person, I love meeting new people, and I am pretty cleanly. I am thinking that it would be a good idea for the first year, just to see how it works out.

But on the other side, I really love my personal space and I like to sit back and play videogames here and there. I don't want an idiot roommate that comes to the dorm at 3 in the morning and just loud and obnoixous.

I am not affraid to confront them at all, but it is the simple fact I know they won't even change that much.

What is the best thing to do?

Having a roommate is kind of an annoying reality at college -- some colleges don't even offer singles. Honestly, if your school is offering singles, you can afford one and there's one available? OMG GO FOR IT. I'd like to pretend that roommates are AWESOME and such, and they can be, but by and large, having a single is preferable. As long as you're on a sociable hall, you'll meet people. Or try it out for a year -- whichever :D

It's a crap shoot who you are assigned, and it is a PITA having a roomie who drinks like a fish, flops in drunk at 3 a.m., pees on your belongings, never cleans up, and has sex in the room with you. All of these things have happened to people I know. And that doesn't even cover stealing, vomiting, drug habits (cocaine, yay!), phobias, listening to music at all hours, waking you up, etc. etc. etc.

I was a resident assistant, and having a single was the best thing that ever happened to me in college. I also never had any problems with students who had singles as well, LOL. :D

It would probably be best for you to live in a single room, and socialize with your neighbours during non-quiet hours. It's a lot easier that way and less awkward. By the time you move in and get to know your neighbours/floor, you'll know their schedules and know when to (or not to) bother them.

The best roommate is the one who is never there. I don't care how social you are but not having a roommate in college, especially on-campus is worth every penny.

The reason I say this is because in college, you will rarely have a regular schedule. Some days you will want to sleep in while others you may have to pull an all-nighter. But on top of your busy schedule, you will also have to accommodate for your roommate's schedule which will be very difficult. Even the sound of your roommates alarm going off early can be really annoying, not to mention affecting your performance during the day such as staying awake in class. Get your own room if any way possible! If you want to socialize, you can walk out of your room and visit people.
