Old PC Space Game?

Back in the 90's I'm guessing around 93-95 I went to a friends house and he was playing this space game I don't know if it was on a Mac or what.
It was a top view game where you fly around space and meet other ships and such, I remember the space craft he had looked like a taxi cab in a way.. or maybe one of the aliens he flew past was the one in the taxi ship, sorry I just don't remember.

I know it's not Starflight, but it's almost the same concept from the few times I watched him play., just the game my friend was playing looked allot better.

If someone doesn't know the game, does anyone know a game like Starflight or some kind of travel through space type game just upgrading your ship and making trades, meeting other races etc.

Was it space trader? Not much animation, mostly text. You could decide to be a pirate if you wanted.
