What song mentions a city, town, or district close to you?

how many miles away is it?
does the song have a good grasp of what that city means to you?
**can anybody tell me what T.york was doing here?

for me: palo alto- radiohead
-0 miles away
-yes it does, growing up i used to call this town 'shallow alto', and the song refers to people's affluence and not having time for each other.

Palo Alto

In a city of the future
It is difficult to concentrate
Meet the boss, meet the wife
Everybody's happy
Everyone is made for life

In a city of the future
It is difficult to find a space
I'm too busy to see you
You're too busy to wait

But I'm okay, how are you?
Thanks for asking, thanks for asking
But I'm okay, how are you?
I hope you're okay too

Everyone one of those days
When the sky's California blue
With a beautiful bombshell
I throw myself into my work
I'm too lazy, I've been kidding myself for so long

I'm okay, how are you?
Thanks for asking, thanks for asking
But I'm okay, how are you?
I hope you're okay too

not my thumbs down, but, answer the rest of the question. does the song reflect your opinion of that city?

Steve Miller Band "Rock 'n Me"

I went from Phoenix, Arizona
All the way to Tacoma
Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A.
Northern California where the girls are warm
So I could be with my sweet baby, yeah

I was born in Tacoma, half my hubby's family is in Phoenix, I live 90 miles from Atlanta and my daughter lives near Atlanta. As far as how the lyrics relate to these cities, I don't think they do. Just some guy scrapping for a job, either a truck driver or musician.

Also, Alan Jackson "Chattahoochee"

Way down yonder on the
It gets hotter than a hoochie coochie
We laid rubber on the Georgie asphalt
We got a little crazy but we never got caught

Down by the river on a friday night
A pyramid of cans in the pale moonlight
Talking 'bout cars and dreaming 'bout women
Never had a plan just a livin' for the minute
Yeah way down yonder on the Chattahoochee
Never knew how much that muddy water meant to me
But I learned how to swim and I learned how I was
A lot about livin' and a litttle 'bout love

How it relates: no doubt, that water is seriously muddy! I've laid pleny of hot rubber with my 67 Camaro on the Georgia asphault too and never got caught! lol... and it sure enough gets hot, last August/September 108 in the shade! Hotter than a witches tittie (hubby says that). It's a great country song that I'm sure a LOT of folks from the area can relate to. Oh, and I live about 7 miles from the Chattahoochee river and work two blocks from it.

and Bobby Sherman did a song titled "Seattle" in 1969

The bluest skies you've ever seen in Seattle
And the hills the greenest green in Seattle
Like a beautiful child growing up free and wild
Full of hopes and full of fears
Full of laughter full of tears
Full of dreams to last the years in Seattle, in Seattle.

When it's time to leave your home and your loved ones
It's the hardest thing a boy can ever do
And you pray that you will find someone warm and sweet and kind
But you're not sure what's waiting there for you.

Well it's true, the skies in Seattle/Tacoma are very BLUE, and the lyrics fit my childhood, no worries of crime, kidnapping, etc... the stuff we have to protect our children from in todays world. Then the part of leaving, it was so hard to leave home when my hubby and the army took me away.

Cool Beans! lol Report It

I LOVE THAT DIRTY WATER (Boston your my home)!!!

EDIT: Ohh yea... Nasty ol' Boston Harbor...it really is disgusting water lol.

The House of the Rising Sun

New Orleans Ladies

Walking to New Orleans

Jesus done left Chicago...bound for New Orleans

The only one I know of is: Ja rule- Always On Time
Only since everybody in my town hypes over it.

"And I'm just outside of Jersey, past the
Palisades"

Which is I would say 1 mile from where I live. And it doesn't really say anything about my town just that Ja Rule is there. But when you live in such a small town, things like this become huge.

tesla girl took mine! :-) love that smelly charles river!

The Spirit of St. Louis - British Sea Power

It doesn't have anything to do with my city per se, but if Charles Lindbergh liked StL enough to name his plane after it, that's cool with me : )

The fact that it's a cool song also helps.

I live in Toronto, Canada.
-Toronto Tontos by Max Webster. They're from Toronto (Kim Mitchell, the lead singer and guitarist, is DJ'ing on Q107 Classic Rock Radio now)
It's more of a rah-rah for Toronto. Thats acceptable, I'm all about rah-rahing for my city.

Others:
-The CN Tower Belongs To The Dead by Final Fantasy...I don't really know why it's called this...
-The Old Apartment by the Barenaked Ladies
I think everyone remembers their first experience in an apartment in Toronto, for better or worse! I definately remember most of the places I've been in!
YYZ by RUSH is relevant because YYZ is the airport code for Pearson International in Toronto. So even though it's an instrumental, it's relevant.

I guess one of the good things about being Canadian and living in Toronto is that nearly every band that 'makes it big' needs to pay some sort of homage to my town.

Detroit Rock City- KISS
Panic In Detroit- David Bowie
Detroit City- Alice Cooper

"My City Was Gone" - Pretenders

approx. 200 miles. There's nothing song worthy to my knowledge in west central Ohio. All the songs I could recall pertain to the eastern side of the state.

The song nailed it. Nothing like trying to go back home after many years for a rude awakening.

Seattle - The Classic Crime, it's exactly how I feel about the place I live. It says you want to get away, but you always come back because it's home.

I live about 25 miles from Boston so..............too many to list here !

Whiskey in the Jar by Thin Lizzy
'as I was going over, the Cork and Kerry mountains'
I live in Cork.

I don't know if this counts, but I live on the highway called 441. In the song American Girl by Tom Petty, he mentions 441.

Boston by Augustana

I've got a gal in Kalamazoo....only song I can think of!

Sublime - Garden Grove

Seven Bridges Road- The Eagles. Its about Norman Bridge Road here in Montgomery, Alabama.

Sweet Home Alabama mentions my state, but not my region. However its still an awesome song. I like it WAY better than The Eagles song.

Edit: sorry missed that part of the question....

Seven Bridges Road describes beautiful scenery , that is completely fitting for Norman Bridge road. However it doesn't fit my description of this city. Montgomery is a cess pool. Honestly. There are bits of beauty though.

( part of the song)

There are stars
In the southern sky
Southward as you go
There is moonlight
And moss in the trees
Down the seven bridges road

"upstate, newburgh" (maybe 10 miles)
it's a lyric from saul williams, who is from that town.
it's off of his self titled album.
and the distillers have the song "sing sing death house"
sing sing prison is close by.
NYC is 50 miles away, lots of songs about new york.

Well, I could go one direction and name any number of songs about San Francisco, but I'll go the other way with "Lodi" by CCR!

About 40 miles away.

**edit - also missed the second part**
Yes, the song does express my sentiments about the town - lol!!
"Oh! Lord, stuck in Lodi again" (I'm sure the residents just *love* this song.... Not!)

The nearest city is " ALLENTOWN " by Billy Joel .

Im in Everett MA.. right next to boston.
SO you have the Standelles- Boston your my home
Dropkick Murphys- Shippin up to Boston
Countless others... and total distance from me to downtown boston = 5.5 miles

Allentown by Billy Joel. I don't live in Allentown, but it's only an hour away.

Kentucky Woman by Deep Purple

I live in Kentucky, and I Married one...lol

Gator Country by Molly Hatchet..closest place I could think of

The outlaws down in tampa town it's a mighty fine place to be.
They got green grass and got high tides and sure looks good to me.

There is some country song that mentions drinking on Chippewa in Buffalo. I live in Buffalo NY and Chippewa St. is where a lot of the popular clubs and bars are, I'm about 4 miles away from it.

I am originally from the Bay Area, so I can relate to your song. I still consider "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" one of my personal favorites, because I actually did leave my heart down there when we moved here to Utah. While my body moved in the space of 24 hours, my heart took years and years to move...

I am sure someone somewhere has written a song about Salt Lake City or the 'burbs where I live, but I cannot think of any right now. Plus, if there is a song out there, it's probably about the great snow that's just a short drive away from my house. I can be at some of the best ski resorts in the US in under 30 minutes. Alas, I am not a fan of mountains or skiing--I miss the ocean. How's that for irony? I am still surrounded by plenty of water, it just isn't in the form I would like it to be in.
