Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates offered Friday to help the U.S. Marines leave town by negotiating an end to the lease for their recruiting station, even as he backpedaled on a City Council resolution declaring the Corps 鈥渦ninvited and unwelcome intruders鈥?in the city.

In the face of an onslaught of pro-military criticism from around the country, Bates, a retired Army captain, also issued a statement that said the City Council鈥檚 resolution Tuesday night 鈥渄id not adequately differentiate our respect and support for those serving in the armed forces and our opposition to the Iraq war policy.鈥?He said he would ask the council to modify the resolution at its next meeting, scheduled for Feb. 12.

A Marines spokeswoman said Friday that the Corps has no intention of abandoning its space at 64 Shattuck Square that has been the subject of protests for months.

In an interview Friday, Bates said he has received more than 1,000 e-mails on the resolution, mostly from 鈥渢he right wing that has really seized up on this and mobilized to pound us.鈥?/div>

No big surprise. They claim to "support the troops but not the war" but this is how they treat the troops wherever they are. He deserves a pounding. The marines have as much right to be there as he does, but this is how the libbies exercise free speech. See, they are all for free speech, so long as you totally agree with them and do what they say. Otherwise, you're wrong. It really gets me the way these people treat the military when if it weren't for them sacrificing themselves and their families for us, these libbies wouldn't have the right to speak out against them. I'd love to see them try this in Venezuela, for example.

Pound Us? What a worthless group of humanity. They are an insult to Americans everywhere. Without our Marines and Military in general, they would not have the right to be the treasonous worms they are. They do not, I am sure, have any problem accepting federal money or help when they need it. Totally arrogant.
