Worried about my parrot, am I just being paranoid?

I may just be overreacting and paranoid, so I thought I would get some opinions rather than taking him straight to the vet.
I have an Orange-winged amazon, he is about 2 years old now, and I have had him for about 6 months, he has had 3 pervious owners, although I think it was mostly down to lack of space that he was sold on as he is one of the sweetest natured birds I have ever met.
He seems to scratch an awful lot around his neck and head. He will sit for hours and let me scratch his neck, (he closes his eyes, lifts his feathers and dips his head) and if I dont, then he will scratch it himself, either with his claws, or with his beak.
The other thing is he seems to have been sleeping a lot more recently. Is this just because its darker for longer periods of the day? (I live in the UK) Or is somethin wrong with him?

He was throwing up when we stayed at my parents house for christmas but I put that down to stress of having a dog and a cat in the house so he had to be kept in his cage most of the time which he wasnt used to.... It seemed to stop when we got back home though. And he does shake sometimes but I thought it might be down to the cold and usually hes fine once I stick the heater on.

Ill take him to the local avian vet and get him checked out. If nothing else it will give me peace of mind, or justify my fears...

Thanks guys. xx

I have an orange wing as well. Mine is also very sweet. Kaytee is 3 and she is very active. She too loves her neck scratched.
Have you given your bird a bath? There is nothing wrong with you scratching his neck or him, but his skin may be irrated and a bath will help!
I know you have only had the bird for 6 months, but you know your bird better than anyone. If there is a sudden change in his behavior then I personally would take him to the vet if is does not change back in the next couple of days. Keep in mind that birds will hide their issues until it is almost to late. This may be him telling you that something is wrong.
Is he eating ok? Are you giving him fresh foods for added nutrition? Does he have plenty of new toys to stimulate him? Try changing his toys up and see if you can get him interested in playing with anything. When you have him out with you get a little toy and sit with him and make him play with it so you are not the play mate.
It could be nothing but i can't tell you that for sure. I would have to see the bird to make that assumption.
good luck.

if you are scarting his neck that is fine he likes it is all, think of it this way if you pet a dog on its head or even a cat it will sit there maybe not for hours but they like the way it feels its like a massage to them , nothing is wrong he could be just tierd or because of the longer period if hes still doing it months from now get him checkd

could be the way he is bondong to you my birds will let me scratch as long as they want me to then they let me know when they have had enough...seems like this bird loves the attention..make sure you have a cage protector and keep giving him love seems he likes it......

I am sure that you have noticed by now that when parrots get new feathers they have a keratin sheath covering them as the feathers emerge. As these pin feathers grow the keratin becomes brittle and is removed by the bird. Then the feather begins to look like a feather. In the areas around the nape of the neck, the head and face the birds have trouble removing these sheaths. In nature they would be removed by another bird. In captivity the bird must rely on you for this part of their grooming. The fact that your bird allows you to groom him show that he trusts you. It is not something I would be concerned about. However, sleeping more can be and indication that he is not feeling well. Birds hide signs of illness. Yet, sleeping more is a sign that we can look for. Also look at his droppings are they well formed or runny and wetter than normal? How is his appetite? Is he fluffed up?Are his eyes bright? Is he sneezing? Is playing less or talking less? If in addition to sleeping more he has one of the following symptoms I would strongly suggest seeing an avian vet, wet or runny dropping, a loss of appetite, is playing or talking less, is fluffed up, has sleepy looking eyes, is sneezing or get crabby. It's hard to say when the only symptom is sleeping more, since I don't know how much more he is sleeping or if something is keeping him awake at night.
