Do ALL goldfish grow to be around 14'' long??

I just purchased a walmart goldfish; you know, those five dollar fantail type. I have heard that they grow to meet the space in their environment but was under the impression that this only applied to larger Koi fish. The ones i am talking about tend to have straighter less billowing fins and a longer more slender body. Do the little pudgy walmart type grow to be that large as well? I just have a hard time picturing this little guy as a foot long fish. As it stands he is barely 2''. Just trying to get all the information so i can be ready to give him everything he needs. How exciting! The fantails usually don't grow more than 8-10 inches, but they are round and fat so you still need at least a 20 gallon tank for one, and 10 gallons each for multiples. As long asyou will upgrade, you can start smaller at this age. Good luck!
PS< they dont grow to meet the space in their environment. They just die young from a painful death of stunting. Your goldie could grow up and live a full life as a beautiful big fish who is quite a character if you let him -- and live as long as 20 or more years. If you want a smaller fish, go for a molly, they're very cute.

Yes, if looked after properly and in a very big tank. Needs a good filter, the best food etc.

Fantail goldfish grow to be about 6" long. They'll require at least a 10 gallon tank. And goldfish do NOT grow to the size of their enclosure - they'll keep on growing to adult size, even if it is too small.

Most grow into their environment and how often they get fed. too many in a tank/pond will slow the growth down too.

Check out the world's largest fantail, Bruce. Your fish will never be that big, but they will grow large if cared for properly and live for years. BTW, Bruce is only about 3 or 4 years old in the picture.

I believe it depends where you keep them. If you keep them in a smaller tank they stay small. And i have never seen a very large fantail.. I just bought two fantails and I keep them in a comfortable sized tank but not really large and they haven't grown too much.

They will get quite large and no fish will grow to the size of it's tank,stunting will occur when a large fish is left in a small tank and it is very bad and painful for the fish.You should have 20 gallons for your first gold fish and another 10 gallons for each additional goldfish.

when you look at a baby can you not beleive that it might grow into a 6' adult?
same thing. you bought a baby fish, babies grow!

fish never just "grow to the size of their environment" i've seen a 12" oranda in a 10 gallon tank with brown-crap laden water, it was really one of the saddest things i've ever seen.

Goldfish grow to the size of their enviroment. So if a goldfish is in a big pond.. big goldfish. If you put it in a small bowl.. small goldfish.
