when starships meet in space, how do they always appear to meet both facing "up" on the same plane?

My guess, if I were going to plan starship navigation, would be that there is an arbitrary "up" direction for navigation, just the way that we decided that the north pole would be "up" on our maps. It could just as easily have been the other way around, after all :-)

Another notion is that there is a polarity to the galaxy, or some other phenomenon that provides directionality, and that ships use it to determine "up and down".

Either way, it definitely makes for better TV if all the ships meet facing the same way :-)

As soon as the spaceships are in space, the artificial gravity kicks in so that everyone is in the up direction relative to Earth. So where ever they go, they'll always be in the up position.

they are shown many times not on the same plane, but i'd say that they are both right side up on the screen simply because no one ever thought to do it any different.

It makes for better TV..it would look rather silly if they were upside down to each other.
