Movie HELP?? I am looking for a older 80's moive...?

The movie was about a bunch of boys that hung out together, the outcasts. They made a little spaceship out of a tilt-a-whorl seat and flew into outer space. They met up with some alien ship and hung out there... and I think they came back. I cannot for the life of me rememeber the name. The main thing was one of the kids fathers was some kind of scientist .. that made some ball or plastic that was flinging around the basement... the son took that material and made it into a tilt-a-whorl spaceship... any ideas??
