How do I get a 12 year old female cat to get along with a 3 year old male cat?

I have had the spayed female cat since she was a kitten. My daughter got the 3 year old neutered male but it wasn't working out so I took him. I put him in a "safe" room for about a week. Their first meeting did not go so well ,he accidentally got out of the room and when he saw her he went right for her. Their second meeting was the same. She is now very afraid of him. I have been putting him in a cat carrier , but the minute she sees him she runs under the bed and won't stay in the same room. I have tried rubbing them with a towel, having them eat out of the same dish, opening the door a little so they can see each other. She is just terrified and wants nothing to do with him. I let each one have some time to roam around the house, then put them in separate rooms. I used a spray bottle the last time he went for her but I don't want to upset her because of her age. Has anyone has success introducing a senior cat and a young adult? They are both beautiful cats!

It is going to be a while until both cats get used to living under the same roof. I had this happen to me. It was so hard to have both cats like eachother. What you can do is have them both in a room together. Don't put them in a small room, put them in a bedroom or if you have a door in your kitchen you can try there. Let them be for at least one whole day. If you hear them hissing, thats normal, they will do that for a while. But if you notice they are fighting non-stop then you know that you should go in a stop them.

You can also have them on a lesh in the house (like in the basement) so they can get used to being around eachother if you don't like placing them in a room together.

Other then that, theres not much you can do but wait and hope it gets better. Good Luck.

I think over time they'll most likely get along. In my experience, it can take some time, but it has worked where they end up being best friends. It is a big adjustment for the older cat to get used to the playfulness of a kitten, as far as getting tackled and that type of thing. Do try to shield the older one from getting attacked too much, if possible.

worst thing you could have done,is bring another cat into the house when your cat is 12 years old,she will never get used to this cat,that's why she is spitting and going for it.. and another reason is 1 its a male,and 2 its invading her territory...
i afraid you need to re-home the male,unless you want your cat to be miserable for the rest of her life...

It will take quite some time for them to get along, but eventually they will tolerate each other. I am in the process of introducing a mamma and her 2 kittens with our 7yr old calico who has been fixed since she was little, and she has absolutely no mothering instinct in her at all! I've been workin on it for 2wks now, but I know it will take alot longer. Just keep trying.

They just have to get used to each other. When they start to fight, just yell NO! After a while they'll get used to each other. I've had the same problem with 2 rats together, 2 fish together(except you can not yell at a fish) and 2 cats together.

You've introduced a cat that definately wants to be the alfa cat of the house. Your older cat deserves to have the last of her years lived in peace. Sorry to say but Mr Kitty needs a new home.
