Permanent musty smell on husbands older clothes...?

My husband prior to us meeting lived in his parents home and his room was their basement. Their house is in NY and had dogs and mold. Any clothes that used to be in that home have this permanent musty smell. I have washed these in color safe bleaches, detergents, and I've even bought little scented dresser drawer sacks to try to help them not have this smell. The smell is musty and it makes my Asthma flare up and I sneeze and begin to itch if I even touch these things. It's been 3 years now and these clothes still have this smell as if they've never been washed. I bought him a new wardrobe a few years back so he no longer wears them but I am wondering what this is and if these can be salvaged?

I would trash them. You can buy a world of used or new clothing from goodwill for a little more than the detergent price.

Go to home depot or lowes and purchase some cedar wood that is made specifically for the purpose you have.

If it is in hangup clothes, you can get sheets of cedar plywood to panel the closet - and that will keep moths out also.

If you live where you can put them out on a line, in fresh air and sunshine, that should do the trick.

this just recently happened to me so..i through them out.Nothing helps
