Help with a math question please?

Michael made a ladder-type book shelf for his room that leans against the wall. It measures 65 inches tall. When placed at an angle on the wall, it is 60 in high on the wall. The wall meets the floor at a right angle. How far out on the floor will the shelf base be from the wall?.

pythagorean theorem.

base squared + height squared = diagonal squared
base = x
x^2 +60^2 = 65^2
x^2 + 3600 = 4225
x^2 = 625
x = 25

Shelf will have to be 25 in from the wall.

Ok, so you need to used pythagorus

pythag states that when you look at a right angled triangle (the ladder being the sloped side (hypotenus, written as c) the wall being the long side (b) and the floor being the short side (a) ) a^2 + b^2 = c^2

You can re-arrange this to find out the short side, (a) which is the distance to the wall.

c^2 - b^2 = a^2

so c= 65
b = 60
a = ?

65^2 - 60^2 = a^2
4225 - 3600 = a^2
1225 = a^2

to find 'a' we need to find the square root of both side

35 = a

therefor the ladder is 35in away from the wall.
