Is this a generational thing?

Do to finances, I've had to rent a room in my home. Two of my last tennants were young men that live like utter slobs. I'm a baby boomer myself. When I was growing up I never met anybody that was even allowed to live like this.

Do something about it.

I've never really met a "neat" or "clean" single young man in my life. But some are worse than others.
I don't think this is generational, or that unusual.
You should frame a friendly set of "house rules" in a little picture frame with suggestions such as 1) Fire code prohibits loose papers and clothing on the floor 2) Help keep your home sanitary, place all uneaten food or soiled wrappers in the bin provided 3) etcetera.
Make it all official looking, like something the health department "made" you put up for "safety" reasons.

Try renting to women. We are usually cleaner around the house. I am an onsite apartment manager and single men no matter what the age for the most part (80%) tend to be horrible at keeping their apt clean. Their bathrooms are NEVER cleaned, and food and dishes all over the place. They don't do laundry
