Why can't I make small talk with my father's girlfriend?

I feel awkward being in the same room as my father's girlfriend (just met her a couple of hours ago). I tried to start a conversation asking where part of the country she came from, but then I couldn't think of anything else to say. I feel like a bad person. I mean, I don't want to make it seem like I am nosy and I don't want to be rude or cold, but I don't know what to say to her. Am I doing the right thing but being courteous and kind to her, but being sort of quiet. I am just not a talkative person.

My mother passed away almost 6 months ago.

I think that she may not be making any effort. If you start to make small talk and ALL she does is answer your questions, then she is the one who is socially inadequate. Just be you. If she is such a dud then your dad will probably tire of her.

Just try your best. Remember she is just as anxious about meeting you. She wants you to like her too. Try asking her what she does for a living, or what kind of music she likes just the same kind of things you would ask anyone else when you first meet them. You could also ask your Dad to help you out with a conversation that you both may enjoy. He knows both of you and knows what your interests are. He will appreciate your effort and can start a conversation that you all may enjoy!

It's always a little difficult meeting any new person, let alone your dad's girlfriend. Maybe sometime when it's just the 2 of you, you could mention to her that you're a little shy but would like to get to know her better. She probably feels a little awkward with you too.

try to find out what his interests/hobbies are then find out more about them and talk to him about them. Or you could try talking about recent events; weather, the news anything except politics or religion.

don't worry about it. it's up to her - she should be the one making the effort and trying to make small talk with you.
