~~Most memorable classical music experience for you?~~?

It can be anything from hearing Pavorotti sing at the Met, to tearing up in your dining room as you realized you adored the Liebestraume No. 3 by Franz Liszt...

sasenach: Both are lovely.

One of the most memorable for me, was the first time I heard the "Toccata" from Charles Marie-Widor's "5th Organ Symphony".

I was in my late twenties I think, and was traversing a long rectangular, park area on the campus of Washington U. in St.Louis, Mo.; wherein was located the university's chapel: an exact replication of King's Chapel, Cambridge, England(I think); anyways, a most beautiful Gothic chapel.

Don't remember what I was thinking about - if anything - it was a crisp, fall day, the campus was covered with tree leaves. And all of sudden the sound of the chapel's organ, breaking thru the silent stillness of the afternoon, thundered forth with this glorious, joyously magnificent music.

I became rooted to the ground, transfixed; and did not move until it had ended: only lasts approximately 4 1/2 minutes, but seemed like an eternity of exaltation.

Will never forget it.
Alberich

Most memorable must be the first thing that poped into my head when I read this question: Mahler symphony no. 5 with Boulez conducting the London Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. It was part of the Boulez/LSO world tour to honor his 75th birthday.

Liebestraume is good in the right mood frame, I would pick it and "Into the west" by Annie Lennox from LOTR "Return of the King:, for my personal eulogy.
