Where to stay in Amsterdam?

I'm going there with a friend in July (not a festival weekend), probably looking at spending 鈧?0-鈧?0 each per night for accom, probably prefer a private room rather than a dorm, any recommendations? Have never been to Amsterdam before and only have the 2 days, so aiming to be pretty central so we can just walk about everywhere. Prefer a hostel to a hotel, as would be good to meet some people to hang out with!

I'm not a big expert (as I live on the outskirts of A'dam so never have to use hotels etc) but I do see the following link recommended by people who have been here many times http://www.hostelworld.com/

It offers a wide range - from the simple bed in a dorm to facilities akin to a hotel, so you should be able to have a look and see what you fancy. Location-wise it's not a big deal as the public transport network by tram is really good (and not expensive) so you can get around easily. Plus the main attractions in Amsterdam, in principle are within walking distance of each other.

Stay with locals! Sign in on www.couchsurfing.com and do a search for a couch in Amsterdam! Definitely somebody allows you to crash on his or her couch for a (few) day(s). For free. It's all about hospitality!

It depends on the room. The more popular rooms will be filled with people. I hang out in the Movies room and it is quite lively most of the time. :)
