What are the pros and cons of a single dorm?

I'll be starting college in the fall and am going to be dorming, since I'm going pretty far from home. I'm really leaning towards living in a double my first year, because of "getting the college experience", meeting new people more easily, and hoping that having a roommate might help avoid big issues with loneliness/homesickness. But can someone tell me what the pros and cons of living in a single are? Housing applications come out in the next few days and I'm just curious.
Oh, and what about pros/cons of triples or quads? Singles, doubles, triples, and quads are all available to undergrads, and I'm not 100% on what type of room I want to request, so feel free to give me any info about those, too. Thanks! :)

A single dorm room would offer you privacy and a place to call your own. In a single, you are the only one responsible for cleaning. You don't have to worry about being a neat freak and having a messy roommate or vice versa. It's also good if you study at strange hours or need to have a specific atmosphere for studying. Since you wouldn't have a roommate, you would have to put forth a little bit more effort to meet people, but having a single doesn't necessarily mean you're not "getting the college experience."

You seem to be a little worried about homesickness and so I would suggest a double. You could even do a triple if you're a person that thrives on social interactions. Just know that the more people you add to the room, the higher the chance for conflict. Having a roommate can help you deal with homesickness and feeling lonely. But if you don't get along with them they could also end up making you feel uncomfortable. Many universities and colleges will send out a profile/personality sheet with the housing apps. This is to help gauge what type of person could be a good roommate match for you. So, if you get one, fill out the profile thoroughly AND honestly. That will help decrease the chances of getting a roomie you don't get along with.

Overall, I would say, be honest with yourself about your living habits and what you're expecting out of your first year. And no matter which type of room you end up in, get out and be social in those first few months! Finding the people who allow you to be yourself (roommates or not) can make any type of living situation positive and could end up being lifelong friends!
