Getting a male stray cat used to 2 female cats?

i took a stray cat to the vet and am keeping him in the basement till he gets neutered, because there are also 2 female cats here in the house.yesterday and today i let him up in the house to meet the other 2 cats, a lot of hissing from 1 and a little from the other one.today the stray jumped at and tried to bite the older female, she was laying down then she was called by her owner and she got up to walk over to her owner and that is when my stray tigger jumped at her and tried to bite her. is that bad to the point where he can never be brought in or do i need to keep trying and maybe put tigger in a carrier and leave him in a room so the others can get use to him? or will that change after he is neutered? please help, thanks

Cats are extremely territorial. Unneutered males can be very aggressive towards cats they perceive as "invading" their territory. Some of Tigger's agressivness will subside after he is neutered but he will still need to be socialized with the other cats. Getting Tigger to accept the other cats (and for the other cats to accept him) is going to take time, lots of it.

Putting Tigger in a carrier and letting the other cats sniff him is a good way to introduce them in a non-confrontational way and let him know that the house is "their" territory and he has to make up to them. After a while, let the cats roam together and they will begin to select portions of the house that they consider theirs. There will be confrontations as they get the pecking order sorted out ( hissing, swatting, chasing) so keep an eye on them so the confrontations don't get out of hand and someone gets hurt.

Good luck!

Hi and good job on the rescue!

First, the stray will definitely calm down when he's neutered. He's also adjusting to his new digs. But did the vet test him for things like feline leukemia and aids? It sounds like a stupid question, because it's a no brainer, but you need to be really sure about this sort of thing before allowing them one-on-one contact.

It may be that your female cat is in season and he wanted to mate with her if she has not yet been neutered.! I would keep them apart until he has been done. Cats can be quite terrortorial and it could take some time for them to get used to each other. good luck

Cats, like dogs, have a hierarchy in the house. You have disrupted this.

All of your animals should be fixed. Female cats will bleed during their periods and yowl. There is also a excellent chance that either will have uterine or ovarian cancer as they age--this is typical when female cats age. Even if your females are inside all the time--they can get out and mate with a tom. If you don't believe me, you should meet my cats--I got them when my boss' female got out, and...you guessed, it she got pregnant.

As for the male, male cats that are not fixed are all about two things--sex and violence. They are animals and its all about putting your genes into the pool so to speak. If you let him around those two females and they are not fixed, you could have a very big problem on your hands. Not to mention, you would be contributing to the pet population problem.

I read a great book called "Cats Confidential" you should pick up. It'll give you a lot of insight into the social pecking order that cats have.

In the meantime, keep your male cat separated until after he is fixed and healed. Hope you have an appointment soon.
