Why is political correctness so unpopular?

Does anybody really want to go back to the bad old ignorant days, when less abled people were 'cripples', everyone not white was 'black' (even Chinese and Asian people!) and the working class weren't allowed in the posh room of a pub in case they got coal dust on the furniture?

Sometimes I think well intentioned people go too far in the name of political correctness (renaming Christmas the 'Winter Holiday' when I've never met a Muslim who felt offended by Christmas) but, on the whole, isn't it a good thing we don't use those words anymore, and cringe at our grandparents when their choice of language takes us back to a more repressive era? What do you think?

yarking lunchloaf - in some parts of Lancashire, I have heard older people still refer to non white people as 'darkies'. They honestly don't mean to be offensive, and would be shocked if you called them a racist - they're just incredibly old-fashioned and out of step. Still, you have to tell them - this is the 21st century now, surely?

People usually don't like to be corrected or made to learn anything new. They certainly don't want to be told (or have it pointed out) that they are insensitive louts.

Granted, some take it too far, which gets annoying, but the idea behind it is just to be more considerate when labeling others. Is that so bad?

When political correctness first started, it eliminated the words that were actually offensive and allowed friendships and relationships to form between people from different backgrounds. So, yeah I agree that PC was originally a good thing.

But it's gone too far today. We can't even express an honest opinion without being censored, and it's caused by government hysteria rather than complaints from minority groups.

There needs to be a balance between not offending someone, yet being able to speak our minds. At the moment, we're leaning too far one way.

"Political correctness" and "correctness" (if that's a word, you get what I mean) are often two entirely different things. When people are afraid of talking to each other for fear of violating political correctness rules, it's gone too far. Political correctness is a good idea, and shouldn't be completely eliminated, but it's done almost as much harm as good in many ways.

Education over Oppression, I say. You can teach people, but the idea of no free speech allowed (even bad/stupid speach) is sad.
I don't mind people skeaping like that, but getting dirty looks is too much.
