Why can't internet abandon chat room?

Every year many kids get harassed by strangers on the internet. Many kids also get kidnapped by meeting someone online and going out to meet the stranger in person with no adult supervision and never return home. If the internet is so so dangerous, why do internet creators block all chat room or at least put a rule saying that NO MINORS ALLOWED. EVERYONE USING THE CHAT ROOM HAVE TO BE 18 OR OLDER. Also chat room users need to give their credit card info to prove that they are over 18. It is free for the first 30 day.

Why can't internet creators make this rule? It is much safer. Parents are so concerned with how unsafe the internet is to their young children.

I don't agree with most of your ideas. Giving your credit card number so you can be allowed in a chat room is something most adults chatters won't do. Besides many adults don't even have a credit card. And also, minors can also have credit cards or even use their parents' credit cards. The credit card verification system would just seem like a way to bill people for a service that should be free.

Yahoo has restricted access to its rooms to adults 18 and over but guess what, children still get in , though their are fewer than before but you'll still find one here and there hanging around wanting to chat. Also there are numerous kids and teen chat rooms on the net as well. Adults are not supposed to be allowed in those rooms but I'm sure some still sneak in.

I think the problem is not the chat room policy but rather the fact that kids are left alone to do whatever they please on the net and their parents are just not their to tell them not to do certain things like give their personal information to strangers or agree to meet a person they don't know. Parents are just not exercising enough positive influence on their children's lives. The children think whatever they do, they don't need to tell their parents about it and society does nothing to help parents in that matter.

Chat rooms are not the only dangerous places for children, think of sites like myspace, and any social networking site for that matter. On those sites, the children put their pictures and give out so much personal information that strangers can see.

Chatting is fun but only when you play it safe.

The Internet was specifically designed NOT to have any centralized control. The reason is that if ANY portion of the Internet is destroyed, the remainer can continue to function as normal. Because of this, NO ONE has total control of the Internet. Even if someone did, the shear number of websites makes actually policing them all impossible.

Why don't we just lock all children under 18 up in padded rooms. Then we can truly make sure they stay safe.
