A building code requires that the windows in a room have glass area equal to 15% of the floor area. An architect's plan has two 3-ft-by-4ft windows is a 12ft-by-15-ft room. Does this plan meet the code? Why or why not? First find the area of the windows. 3 x 4 = 12 ft^2. Multiply this by 2 (there are 2 windows). 12 ft^2 x 2 = 24 ft^2. Now, find the area of the room. 12 x 15 = 180 ft^2. Then, divide 24 ft^2 by 180 ft^2 to see if it equals .15. 24/180= .13333... no because 15% of 180(area of room) is 27square feet. the total area of the glass is only 24square feet. 2*3*4 = 24 |
