How to stop my dog from using my house as a bathroom??

I have a cocker spaniel 1.5 years old male. I walk him 4 times a day with a very precise schedule: food twice a day before the walk and the walks are at 7, at 12, at 6 and at 9. I work, so the schedule can not change, but I keep the time of the walks even in the weekends. All he does outside is sniffs and sniffs and sniffs and does not do his business. Sometimes he does, sometimes he does not, but the fact is that EVERY DAY when I come home from work - there is either poop or pee on the carpet! And he knows that he has done wrong, he meets me with a guilty look. I do not beat him, but put him in a dark room for 15 minutes time-out. I do everything I was told in order to stop this behavior. He has plenty of love, attention, play and everything. But this ruining the carpet business is wearing me off, I am ready to give up and just let him go. What can I do?

HI there, I would suggest using a crate during the day while you are out as least if he does make a mess it is in his 'space' which as most other posts have indicated they don't like this! But changing newspaper is so much better than cleaning carpet! Friends of ours suggested white pepper when our cat was peeing on the floor and it worked a treat! I used it behind the sofa to deter the puppy and again it works fantastic. I'm not sure if you can put pepper all over the carpet but you could try the spots he uses the most....Good luck :)

Time out isnt teaching the dog anything at all, The dog knows your going to put him in a dark room thats why he looks guilty.

You cant blame the dog for your inability to house train him, Its your fault your dog isnt house trained. I know this is frustrating but thats the truth. Why cant you leave him outside while you are not there or crate him?

I have house trained many dogs and it takes no longer than a week to train any pup but i dont leave them inside when i am not there.

Take him to the vet, he might have a bladder infection-possibly, you're doing every thiing right except during the day while you are at work put him in a play pen w? puppy pads, once he gets use to puppy pads he can get the run of the whole house without peeing on the carpet. I recommend really cleaning the carpet spots so hes not atrcted to pee or poop there.;)(Even try getting your carpet cleaned.)

Crate him when you can't supervise him. If you are coming home from work at lunch time to walk him, then it is perfectly acceptable to expect him to "hold it" for that time.
