You and the rudest and meanest person you've ever met in one room... what would you do?

my boss thought of having a small dinner with this co-worker who is the rudest and meanest person i've ever known.

basically i tried to be nice but it never works. everyone said the same thing. this guy makes up gossips and lives in his own weird world where he is god.

any suggestions lest i start using the knives and fork on him.

I would limit my interaction with him as much as possible. If he's already seated when you arrive at the dinner party, simply say "hello, everyone!" Use the same approach when you are leaving. If he tries to engage you in conversation, provide only brief responses; "yes", "no", "I don't know", etc. will work and end the encounter. Don't stoop to his level. Be polite when you have to be, but ignore him otherwise. If he gossips about you, don't worry. Sounds like everyone has got his number!

I would stop looking in the mirror and leave. Its creepy being in a big room all by yourself.

Ignore him, he lives in his own world, he obviously has mental problems.

First, I would stop looking in the mirror & I would try make excuses to not have dinner with that person or just leave.


Somebody has told me this: If you treat that person like your bestfriend (Give them a huge smile, greet them happily & maybe hug them!) theyre going to be confused and stop being nasty for the night.

they would HATE that and its what i would do

Just let him live in his own magically ignorant fantasy world.

I will simply leave the room or just try to stay calm and pretend that everything is all right.

I would probably decline the invitation for a cozy dinner like that when I was first invited.

If I were in the situation, I would eat quietly and then politely say good night and thanks for the dinner.

I always figure the less I speak around people like that, the less they have to talk about.

then just tell him what you think of him : )

or if he doesnt go for dinner approach him at work .
go right up to him in his face . then tell him what you think of him . and why you are doing it dont loose eye contact. its that you gotta invade his personal space . and show him up infront of his workers. just make sure you now what you are going to say

if everyone else See's him as your describing him, then obviously it seems futile, don't kiss his @$$. be yourself and don't let him bait you.

Don't pay anymore attention to this person. Showing any emotion is a sign of weakness. But if this person touches you to a point you have to physical defend yourself, I'll say do what you have to do.

I once had this situation but it was less intense. A guy who was well known for never stopping his karate talk sat with us for a precious tea break one time.
We listened to his endless talk about his hobby, we feigned interest, we encouraged his boastfulness about his skill. All the time we were laughing at him and he had no idea. I even told him 'it must be nice to know you can handle yourself in the dark'.............he hadn't a clue. He had a good time and so did we. No harm done.
