Does anyone know of a coffee maker that meets dorm room specifications?

We're not allowed to have coffee makers in our dorm. My guess as to why is because of the hot plate bottom.

Does anyone know of an alternative way to make coffee...something without an open hot plate?

I've already tried the instant coffee (the powdered stuff) route, and it didn't taste that good.

I was an RA at a university and we allowed coffee makers if they had automatic shut offs. Check your rules or with your RA to see if that's the case. Also if you have a common room or a kitchen, most of the time some things are allowed in there that aren't allowed in private rooms. Maybe you and a few fellow floor mates could buy one together for the lounge or kitchen? I don't know what your college does but we couldn't just do random checks of dorm rooms. If you have a pot with an automatic shut off, why would anyone ever see it? Just put it in a drawer over breaks, anyone who checks shouldn't be allowed to look in your drawers. Good luck finding a way to get your coffee fix! :)

If you have a microwave you can heat hot water in a the microwave and use a french press. They make great coffee!

The stainless Bodum is good because it is insulated and it's metal so it won't break if the roomates get frisky. You can find cheaper ones in glass.

Look for one that has a thermal carafe. No heating/warming element, water heats, brews and that's it. That may meet your specs.

Or look for a "French Press" if you have a way to heat water, e.g., microwave.
