How do you create a good first impression?

I've got a couple of friends and people around me who are very good at this. I easily spot when people can create rapport with someone as soon as they meet for the first time.
This occurs with various people, ex. the taxi-driver, meeting new people at a party, the waiter/waitress, or just being introduced to another friend.
The results shows in the other person as being friendly, smiles a lot, talks and ask questions immediately or being more alert and attentive to this person than others.
I've seen people with good confidence just walking into a room with no people they know at all, immediately to get everyones attention, to start a conversation, etc.
Which techniques have been successful to you?

for me, i guess, i would say i like people right away who are polite and friendly. also, people who take the time to acknowledge me personally and treat me with respect and interest -- but sincerely, not artificial or pretend interest or respect. it doesn't hurt to also look good -- clean, neat clothing, nice smell -- not an overpowering perfume or colonge, and nice shoes. also, clean neat hair is a must. and for guys, clean shaven is good. i also like people who give a firm, not bone-crunching, but a good handshake. i hate the wet fish two finger sort of thing. also, smiling is a must.

First take a deep breath. Stand up straight, look the other person (s) in the eye and be yourself. Do not pretend to be someone that you're not.

A good way to create a good first impression: be yourself.

For me, because I tend to be around a lot of people, it would be to use a big smile, then you go up and introduce who you are, and start a conversation. Being friendly, opened and polite is always the best impression for anything.

l believe you can only be yourself.We are all born with different personalities.Some of us are shy,some very vibrant and out going.So it depends.l think being a good listener if you are shy,and then asking this person questions about themselves is a good way to initially interact with new people that you have just met.Be friendly,smile a lot,be interested in the conversation.At least you are giving it a go.
