Abandoned cat?

My opposite neighbours moved house around 4 or 5 weeks ago. I did not know these people - they were a youngish couple in a rented house with a small child.

About two weeks ago I noticed their cat hanging around. He was a kitten last summer so I guess he is coming up to a year old.

This cat was still around last week and looking somewhat bedraggled and feeling sorry for him I've let him in my house and started to feed him.

I have contacted the RSPCA and the Cat's Protection League and I have asked my post lady if she knows where these people have moved to. She is still delivering their mail to the house so they obviously have not bothered paying to get it forwarded. She has no idea where they have gone.

I'm quite happy to adopt the little mite (I have three cats already so one more won't make a lot of difference, despite their obvious disdain) but I don't want to pay for him to be neutered for the people to suddenly turn up and try to claim him back.

Any other suggestions ...

... on ways to try to track down the owners.

The second question is perhaps more important.

I'd heard the people calling this cat and know his name to be 'Twinkle'. No way can a tom cat be burdened with such a daft name!

Suggestions for a cool alternative. He is black and white :)

Have you taken the cat to the vet for a check-up? I would advise taking him in and having him checked for a microchip. Also, call around vets in your area and see if any of them have had this family call to report him missing.

If he has been abandoned, then he is definately rightfully yours now for caring for him. However, you need to be very sure that they aren't looking for him and that they have indeed abandoned him. If they moved 4 or 5 weeks ago and you noticed him hanging about 2 weeks ago, then there is the possibility that they took him with them and he has since gotten away and come back to a home he knew and was comfortable with.

They've abandoned him.
He's now officially a stray and you can keep him technically.

If you get him fixed and bring him home with his tags, they can't legally take him because they don't have proof that he was theirs.
Nobody should abandon a cat without food and water then expect to get it back after it's been taken care of and loved on.

I'd call him..
Blackjack orrr Sarge. lol
I'm silly like that.

1st question: Well you should probably continue taking care of him, and at the small chance that the people come back, they abandoned it so it's should be yours. (because of abuse)

2nd question: There are 2 names that my friend Sarah and I thought of sarah's is oreo, and mine is smudge.

If the people moved, and you haven't seen them since and it's been 4-5 weeks, I seriously doubt they even care where the cat is. I'd call the SPCA in your area and check the laws on this just for some reassurence. Good luck to you! The cat will be better off in your care!

They abandoned him and it's been two months. He's yours. They forfeit all claim to him.

If they'd cared, they'd have asked the neighbors to call them, but these people don't care so if it was me I'd take the cat in and rename him something more appropriate.

keep the poor thing! if u have othre cats u will be fine! and for a name... how about oreo?? =)

those people are jerks. good for you for taking care of the little guy.
i would really suggest getting him neutered bc you dont want him to make more baby kittens all around town that dont have anywhere to live or anyone to take came of them either. and he will be alot healthier/nicer/wont spray all over your house. you can find free or low cost spay/neutering places all over the country if it has to do with the expense.
they obviously dont care about the cat so if for some reason they come back and want to take him they have no right to because they have abandoned him.
ps i think you should name him Astro.

He's been abandoned - maybe their new house won't let them keep pets - whatever, it's no excuse. Lucky he found his way to you.
As for a name - sorry my cats names sort of develop to suit the cat, I once had one for 3 weeks before a name actually suited it. As they say,, the naming of cats is a serious matter !

poor kitty, thank you for being one of the few good people in this world and taking it in. the people obviously don't care enough about their belongings (mail, cat, house, ect) so i think you may be stuck with the charges. try to find a discount place in your area, or some vets have payment plans. i don't think you should track them down, i don't think they would do anything about it. but i like the name twinkle hahaha but if you don't then maybe shadow or midnight or oreo
