Moving Out of the USA: What Do do with my mail? |
My girlfriend and I are moving out the country but I'm not sure what we should do with our mail? Also, is there a place where I can have our mail forwarded to that is not a P.O. box that I can use to forward my mail to? I ask because a number of companies refuse to ship to P.O. box addresses. Go to the post office...ask them about how to do this. Do you have a friend or relative that your mail could be forwrded to? They could sort it and send only the important stuff to you. Contact credit card companies and set up on line billing and stop the paper bills. Same with your bank accounts. Any junk mail, you don't want anyway. And what "companies" are going to be sending you things that they won't send to a post office box? Sounds like mail order or internet ordered stuff...so just do not order things! Won't do you any good anyway. Are you going to maintain a legal address in the U.S. for tax purposes?A friend or relatives address? You need to send change of address to IRS so your tax forms will get to you...and they won't send them overseas. Of course you can do those on line too. Do everything you can to minimize the amount of mail you will be likely to get, then divert it to a friend or relative to sort for you. Fill out a change of address card at the post office giving that persons address. When you do your state tax the beginning of 2009, you will fill out the number of months you actually resided in the state and only pay taxes forthat period of time. the next year, you do not need to file the state tax form because you will not have earned money in that state. If youhave interest or investment income from the U.S., you wll need to pay federal taxes on that. IRS website has info on this. Just think through everyone you get mail from..and either end it, or divert it. If you will still own propety in the U.S. remember your yearly property tax notice...have it diverted to friend or relative. It might take about a year, but mail will slow down to a trickle. |
