I emailed my city council members about some concerns in my city, is there a privacy law about them forwarding |
I emailed my city council members with a concern about some local contractors in my city. I am now being emailed back from some of those contractors. Someone from council forwarded that email to these people. I was wondering, is there some sort of privacy law against elected officials forwarding those emails? Not only am I getting hate mail now, but it has become a problem for the company that I work for even though I sent the email as a private citizen. Nope, and in general the email is PUBLIC record. Any communication with a governmental entity is generally a public record unless the Freedom of Information Act, or Sunshine in Government (depending on location) law provides otherwise. Those exceptions are few and generally relate to HR matters with employees, and security issues. E-mail is not considered private. Your privacy has not been violated. If you sent it from a computer at your workplace, it is a misuse of company equipment and time. If you complained about the contractor, the same contractor has the right to know who has filed a complaint against them. |
