What do i have to do to be prepared when I leave my husband?

I have 2 kids. He was physically abusive in the past and although it has been a long time since he has physically injured me he insults me all the time and I believe he is on the verge of being physically violent again. I have a 1 1/2 month old and am ready to finally leave. I have been trying to organize some kind of battle plan so that I have no excuses to give myself. What else can you think I should do that isn't on my list?
Arrange for new housing
Arrange for childcare (they have been at home)
Get a restraining order
Get any documents together
Get a po box and forward mail
Change accounts and direct deposit so he can't get to my money
Get a storage shed
What do you think about hiring a private investigator to help prove his character. Both of the times the cops got called when he abused me, they got dismissed as I was scared for them to put him in jail and didnt show at court. He also makes me pay all the bills but has bank accounts he wont let me see. Please help.

Get a lawyer. You'll need one for the divorce. A lawyer can also help you take the steps you need to take and possibly help you with other ideas that are applicable to the laws in your state.

I don't think a private investigator would help unless you're going to have him take pictures while the guy beats you.

it's good that you have a plan...a private investigator might be a good idea, you never know if or when you may need proof of his character to protect your kids
