Quesion about Post Office Boxes?

I am moving to another city in a few months. I want to go ahead and get a PO box from the new city. The problem is, I wont be going there for a few months, and it's pretty far away. Can I get the PO Box online now, and just have the mail from it, forwarded to me until I get there

Yes. You can go to your local post office and fill out the paperwork including showing your IDs (you need two). They then mail the paperwork and your check to the office where you want a box. The office will process your paperwork and send you the receipt and your box number. You can check on line at www.usps.com to find who has boxes in your area, the hours the lobby is open for you to get your mail, and what the cost is.

Now I will say that this is not commonly done, but it can be done. The office that you go to can easily verify your information and check your IDs.

If there is a problem, ask for a supervisor or call the 1-800-ASK-USPS number. They can call the po in the town you're going to if they need to.

Of course, if you are visiting the new location to check on apartments or houses, you can always stop in and get a box. You don't have to have a local address in order to get a box. It is important to note that if you do a permanent forward from a box, you automatically close the box.
