Using peroxide to lighten hair?

Someone forwarded me an e-mail that had a long list of random uses for peroxide and one of them was to highlight your hair. It said to mix a 50/50 solution of water and peroxide and comb it through wet hair and that it would gradually produce natural looking highlights. I'm just wondering if this is true? I am a little nervous to try it because I have long, dark hair and I don't want to ruin it by damaging it or having it turn orange or anything like that! Also, if this does work, how long does it take to notice results?

In theory if it did work, your hair would still turn orange...because you have DARK hair, it's hard to get a true blonde, and you probably have to lighten your hair twice, and then possible use a toner to cut out any gold or yellow.

So even if it did/does work, don't do it you'll have orange highlights.

You cannot lighten hair by using peroxide alone. It must be mixed with an ammonia based color or a liquid or powdered bleach.

OMG!! dont do it, it really turns your hair a different color!! (orange) Dont do it it will also damage ur hair!!!! it takes right away to notice results and it doesnt come out!

No, I tried to lighten my bangs when I was younger just using peroxide and it didn't do anything except make my hair smell funny. Just use Sun-In if you want to lighten your hair in a natural way. Just spray it in, go out side, and let the sun do it's work.
