Manager deliberately trying to rile me up?

I'm an earth-concious kind of girl: I bring my own bags to the grocery store, drive a fuel efficient car, and started a recycling program at the office to combat the amount of paper that we waste.

One of the managers (not my direct manager) is the exact opposite: He drives a HUGE SUV, leaves all the lights on in the conference rooms, bypasses the recycling bin and heads straight for the trash can, and likes to call me a "tree hugger" and joke about my desire to live a greener lifestyle.

I had just arrived to work, and was in my car, when I saw this manager walking into the office. He pulled out a piece of gum from his coat pocket, unwrapped it, tossed the wrapper onto the ground and then shot me a smile and a wave.

I feel like this was a deliberate attempt to irritate me. How can I approach this with him? And how can I get him to STOP calling me a tree hugger in front of co-workers?

But, I'm not being sexually harassed....I can't play that card. I'm too moral a person.

Ignore him. The offenses you described are too minor for you to do anything about. Ignore him until he does something that constitutes harassment and then complain. Calling you a tree hugger isn't even an insult. Driving a giant SUV is not harassment. He might be the worst polluter in the world, and might flaunt in to you, but that is not harassment. Just take his silly behavior and wait. And keep up the good work. You are making friends and he is letting everyone know he is a fool.

Talk to your direct manager. He/she can have a one-on-one with him about the appropriate ways to treat an employee. I personally think it's very childish for a grown man to act like that, especially one in a management position. Kudos to you for starting a recycling program at work.
If your boss can't get this stopped then you'll have to go a little higher. No one should have to put up with being called names at work, EVER! I wish you all the best, and keep up the good work.

You can't change anyone. Change comes from within and is inspired by what we see, hear, read, etc.

Your example may not be the inspiration for this particular man, but for others, I am sure you have earned their admiration and respect.

Keep up the great work and THANKS for doing more than your part to make the world better for everyone, including the SUV drivers, litterbugs and electricity wasters.

First off, I commend you for caring about this Planet. BUT! You don't declare war on the hand that feeds you. You may want to back up and humble yourself a little bit. People can call me a tree hugger all they want. Why should it be taken as an insult when that is basically what we are. Back off your attack on your Manager or you will be surviving on the aluminum cans you save.
