How do you break off a conversation?

When you are 'working the room' at a conference or banquet - what is the best way to break off a conversation with someone? I have used "I'm going to go grab another drink" - but it doesn't always work (like when you have a full drink in your hand.) What is the best way to break off a short conversation - 'excuse me, I have to go' (and then run away like you have diarrea?)

I smile and say, "Well, it was so good talking to you! You take care!", let them say something similar, and walk away.

In a situation like that,
I would probably say "Excuse me but,I'm meeting one of my friends here he/she is waiting outside for me. I'll get back with you in a sec.". and smile.

say have to go to the bathroom, pretend your phone is ringing (make sure it is on silent first), or just keep looking at your watch alot. that always works. or, if you have kids, you can say that they need to talk to you or something.

try not to be rude though.

If you don't want to lie, just say "could you excuse me for a second?" or "it was nice seeing you!" and then smile and walk off. It's the natural flow of party conversations and they can't get offended.

Simple....."If you'll excuse me, I'd like to mingle a little." This way when they see you talking to someone else, you didn't lie and they won't think you're a jerk.

Close your eyes and start snoring.

You get to know when the conversaton is winding down so you can say, excuse me and step away. Sometimes someone else jumps in which is another great time to make your exit. Or you can "spot" someone and excuse yourself because you need to say hello to that person. Or maybe you just need to refill the appetizer plate. Lots of ways really.

"...excuse me but I'm overdue for my medication...."

"I'll talk to you in a couple of minutes. I want to talk to my other colleagues about something. "

"Excuse me, I see somebody I've been meaning to talk to."

"Would you excuse me? I need to get back to my table."

"If you'll pardon me, I'm going to go find my seat. I've been on my feet all day."

"Gosh, I've been talking your ear off over hear, and I left my wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend to fend for himself. I'd better go rescue her/him. See you later!"

"Well, nice seeing you. Take care!"

Let the individual finish his conversation then simply say, 'It's been nice talking with you. Keep in touch (or, I'll see you around.' or 'Take care.'). "I've got to run. It was nice seeing you again!"
