Treatment at work while pregnant? |
I work at a top-tier consulting firm. I had a baby a month ago and am back at work, but was thinking about life while pregnant. Have any other woman experienced men treating you like you have some grave medical condition when you were pregnant? Or that you were fragile? One of my co-workers would offer his arm when i was walking down the stairs, or to the conference room. lol And it didn't seem like i was permitted to carry anything lol Maybe it is because of the highly male environment that i work in, but has anyone else experienced this? men AND women treat pregnant women like they are broke. Apparently being pregnant means one no longer has common sense, can't feed herself or dress herself. And needs help doing the most simple things in life, like unlocking a door. Not yet but I hope to =) They were being chivalrous. Does not occur all that often and should be encouraged. I was not permitted to carry anything that weighed more than 5 lbs. at my work. So I took it in stride and had other people do my dirty work of carrying my files to the file room. I rather enjoyed it because it only last so long. My husband treated me like I was a cripple early on in my first pregnancy. At first I enjoyed not having to do anything, but eventually it got very annoying and I had to say something to him. It is just men trying to be nice, something we women should do our best to enjoy while it lasts. LOL yes i have on both ends male and female co-workers I had this happen alot at my work. I'm a CNA and for the most part my co-workers treated like normal but my patient's families would freak out If I tried to lift anything (I had lots of little old ladies insisting that they help me lift/reposition they're husbands even though they could barely stand themselves). I went to a couple of meetings where there were no chairs and everyone was standing. My pregnancy, being quite obvious, provoked several people to ask if I would like them to provide a chair for me to sit in. I smiled and politely declined. Little did they know, my sciatic nerve troubles actually made standing more comfortable. Oh my gosh! I know exactly how you must have felt. I am 32 weeks pregnant and have everyone, men and women, here at work saying " in your delicate condition". I say I am about as delicate as a Mac Truck! LOL Its like we have a sign on our bellies saying be nice to me im going to be a mommy! It upsets me because I think women are the toughest people for having to deal with all the pregnancy stuff and these people who think we shouldnt do anything but "rest" and "eat". |
