What's with all the camera movement in film and tv these days?

I seen this first while watching (for about 10 minutes) NYPD Blue about 10 years ago. I know people are trying to be artistic or whatever but all of that camera movement gives me a headache. My eyes start blurring and I can't concentrate on what's going on with the characters of the show/film. I was just trying to watch Walking Tall: Lone Justice and it was interesting at first until they got to the scene with some lawyers in a conference room talking about god-knows-what. I couldn't make any sense of it because the camera movement was fugging with my head. ZOOOOM IN! ZOOOM OUT! ZOOM IN ZOOM OUT! It's okay for amateur video takers like dads and moms taking video of their kids at a baseball or soccer game, but for Walking Tall: Lone Justice, it totally ruined the movie. The lawyers didn't help either with their horrific display of "acting". I had to turn it off right there. Didn't even want to finish that POS of a movie. I would work for much less than those actors and do a better job!

Oh, wow, I thought I was the only one who had this problem!

I always feel sick if I watch these kinds of movies.
I seriously hate these kinds of shots. Every time there is a movie like this playing on TV I always turn it off, if I happen to watch a movie like this in theaters, I would walk out immediately.

Movie directors thought that these kinds of shots are more realistic because he think that we would think that we are one of the person in the movie.

It's really stupid, they could've just used some other things to relate to the situation rather than making the audience feel sick and throw up.

The directors think it adds more "realism" to the show... The popularity of "Cops" is what started it I think!

I feel your pain, xaethyr. Directors like this sort of thing because it looks like documentary filmmaking and therefore seems more "realistic" (never mind that, as a stylistic choice, it's just as artificial and arbitrary as smooth, sweeping, tracking shots). It makes me queasy sometimes, too. I've actually become ill at some of these shaky-cam movies, particularly "Husbands and Wives" and "Babel." Good movies, but nearly impossible for me to watch on the big screen. (Not so bad on TV, though, since you can look away from the screen.)
The jittery-camera thing started about a quarter-century ago with the invention of the SteadiCam, which allowed freer hand-held camera-work. As filmmakers make the transition to even smaller digital cameras, I fear the trend is only going to get worse. Stock up on Dramamine, xaethyr.
