Why can my IM contact see what I write, yet I cannot see what I write or her written replies?

I try to open contact with a particular person on Messenger, and I get an error notice that says there is a "SCRIPT ERROR" on page and I don't know what that means, or how to fix it, and I can write to this contact and she sees what I write but I do not, and when she writes back to me I cannot see anything she writes.
This is a new (used/refurbished) computer and I'm trying to get things working on my own and I am having very little success, especially with Messenger, and I need help and no nonsense because I am very inexperienced with these machines, so I hope for qualified answers and easy to understand instructions to fix problems, PLEASE! If she and I are in a conference room we can see what we write to oneanother, but on Messenger, I see nothing
