Is there such a thing as job fairs for older job seekers?

Although I am a member, I can't get AARP to respond to this question. It would be nice if organizations like this would give us some grass roots assistance. Although age discrimination is against the law, it is just a prolific as ever. I was even discriminated against by an agency of Long Beach (CA) City Government. I had a great first interview with a couple of old cats who called me back to interview with a pair of fresh-out-of-colllege girlies. When I walked into the conference room, they shot looks at one another and I could hear them thinking at each other..."Eeewww, she's old!" They even refused to allow me to test for the job, as promised, just by their first impression. This is just a sample of what it is like out there.

You really have my sympathy.

I think I've been on both ends of this situation. As a brash, fast-track manager, hiring for my expanding organization I know I exhibited a favoritism for the younger tigers & tigresses. Now I've seen their faces as I enter the room. Payback!

The most common advice I've heard is, "Dye your hair."

Another formula I have heard is, if your skills and experience are appropriate, to focus on industries or corporations whose growth is so rapid they are having trouble hiring enough people. This sounds good in theory but my guess is that the people in high demand are those who are masters of the very latest technologies.

Lastly, I know an older person who recently picked up a teaching job. Perhaps teaching is an area where demand often excedes supply.

As for job fairs for older job seekers, perhaps they are hard to find because, in order to work, they would have to be discriminatory!

depending on your background and current financial situation I say start your own business if you would like more info write to me at bill67co@yahoo.com

Many state and city agencies have a senior-based employment program. The one in NY is called "SCORE." Your state's labor dept. would know.

You may find your interviews will go a little better if you have a more positive outlook towards younger employees. It is simply a fact of life that as more older people retire, the fresh out of college girls and boys will be taking over. At an interview with a younger manager, you may even want to politely point out that you realize you're in the later stages of your career, but you've been diligent in keeping your skills fresh by ____(give examples -- software courses, etc.)

Good luck to you -- there are many employers who value experienced workers, you just have to keep your chin up and keep trying.

Wow, the valley girl syndrome has moved to the beach.
What ever it is that you do, offer companies, a new applicant screening service for professionals. Replace their HR, by offering a cost saving.
You have motivation, now carry out a vendetta.

Personally, I would think that your experience would be a plus. Change your resume so as to emphasize your maturity.
While the "Eeewww" 'ers are panicking, you've seen it before.
