What was the legal determination for Thomas Mertons death in Bangkok 1968?

Thomas Merton, (Father Louis) was found electrocuted in his room in Bangkok. He was there for a religious conference. There has always been speculation that this was not an accident. Some people believe he was about to reveal his reasons and desire to leave the R.C. Church. Any opinions out there? This incident occured in 1968.
His remains were returned via U.S. military aircraft and my research reveals that only one person was allowed a viewing. Father Patrick of the Gethsemani Monastery in Kentucky.
