How can I tell my parents about CAPD?

Well I tried telling them about ADD and that was a huge mistake... then I saw a commercial about CAPD. I thought to myself, "Oh my gosh. This sounds exactly like me." When I was 7 I got tubes put in my ears because I had ear infections in both ears ALL the time. My name is ASHLEY and when people say ACTUALLY i get confused. I'm easily distracted. I take longer to process info. In class, my teachers always have to repeat themslves because I can't determine if they are saying TWO or WHO. I can't work in a noisy room...i'll just sit there. I have a short fuse when people can't understand what i'm saying. I'm 14 years old and i'm a "space cadet" that's what my friends call me. How can I tell my mom about CAPD? Would it be a mistake to? Should I just go on in life like this and always have a problem? Does this even sound anything like CAPD? help me...

If you have a social worker at school get them to speak to your parents for you. They probably have a pamphlet on Auditory Processing Disorder in their office. You could also get a pamphlet from a hearing centre, where audiologists test for hearing problems. They are often in shopping malls or close by.

My son has/had CAPD (he's now 16) and i asked the teachers to sit him at the front of the classroom so that the distractions were all behind him.

From what you say it certainly does sound like you have CAPD too. Well done for figuring out what is troubling you.

Wikipedia have a good page on Central Auditory Processing Disorder. Read as much as you can about it elsewhere as well while waiting for your parents to catch up and help you.

I hope this situation works out well for you and that your parents are helpful. It can be hard for parents to admit that there is anything wrong with their child.

Don't label your condition, simply explain to your parents that you have trouble hearing and it's affecting your ability to focus in school and can you please go to a specialist to get tested...there's no shame in it - it happens to a lot of people - the sooner you get medical attention - the better it will be - don't delay...good luck
