Where have juicy mangoes vanished ? Earlier dozens of their varieties existed & liked too. What happened ? |
Earlier there were dozens of varieties of juicy mangoes available in the market. They were very tasty, better digestible than mangoes of pulps & much cheaper too. What has happened to all those ones that they are neither seen in the market nor anywhere in orchards too as if people have either cut down their trees indiscriminately or stopped planting fresh ones b coz of lower costs. Their solid 'papad'(thin hard sheets made by mixing their juices with something else & preserving for years) too have vanished from markets. Now only magoes of pulps are available. Juicy mangoes had more & stronger fibres. People used to squeeze their juices, mixed with milk & took. That was making them stronger & fairer too. Is it so from commercial point of view or there is something else? Now only 2 -3 types of juicy mangoes are available despite great efforts by Shri Ramaiyah in Andhra Pradesh of India by planting 2,00,00,000 mango trees at roadsides & open spaces with his team on bicycles. Why ? It is the fact that juicy mango trees can be grown even in wastelands which are soily. Most of the trees existed in such lands but the moment trees stopped giving good yields b coz of deterioration due to old age, people cut them but did not plant new ones which takes four years to give fruits. All state governments are highly responsible for that as there was no govt scheme even for namesake visible anywhere in south asia to show that for planting new juicy mango trees though it requires only sowing of its seeds & forgetting as a small number of people did privately. Shri Ramaiyah is greatest of all. next time you see a developer constructing apartment blocks, or see the ever-widening roads, illegal settlements on the outskirts of cities, you will know why there are no mangoes around. every tree that has been cut down to make way for "progress". when i was growing up, i heard my parents talk about their childhood when mangoes were bought by "sekra" or hundred, and they described so many other fruits that i never got to see. our children will suffer the same fate. cheaper varieties are phased out since the export market only will pay for the high profile mango - alphonso. so the other varieties are used to generate canned pulp. the desehri and langda from UP, the himayat and shakkar-ghutli from Andhra Pradesh, all are slowing being phased out. whenever people build houses the first thing they do is cut down trees on the land. earlier roadsides had mango and tamarind trees and it was meant to provide seasonal fruits to the poor and the birds. these days who gives away fruit to the poor and needy for free? they are planting eucalyptus, sheesham, banyan trees which do not provide any fruit. daily i see people cutting down trees without replacing them. it is a sad thing for our country that mango the fruit we identify our country with is going to disappear soon. we should share our concerns with people around us. just writing about it will not solve the problem. why don't you organise a movement that goes around planting mango trees, have a goal that in one year you will plant 10,000 trees around where you live, ask people to plant at least one tree in the space in front of their house. it requires watering daily for a few weeks then it takes care of itself. we waste so much water in washing our cars and cement verandahs, we can easily spare half a bucket of water for the plant. all the best. let us see how many get inspired in a country where the spirit of doing someting worthwhile is completely destroyed. it took children from a western country to come and clean the base of mount everest. where you go presently due to modernisation and mad of science improvement people forgot to grow the mangoes in natural way. You have to go to pakistan or india... all the good mangoes are gone.. they're imitation ones from central america.. increasing use of pesticides has caused mangoes having a sour taste |
