How long before commercial space travel is commonplace?

If you are talking about suborbital trips to the edge of space, this wll be fairly commonplace within the next ten years. Companies are already designing prototype space ships. These trips will be primarily for entertaining the wealthy, with no real business or logistics value, other than the price of the ticket. It is possbile that commercial "space planes", again largely suborbital, can enter the ystem for commercial air travel in the next 15-20 years but I doubt it. The R&D costs and building these space planes may prove prohibitive. That's why we never saw a successor to the Concorde, the now-retired supersonic passenger airliner developed by Great Britain and France. Commercia travel to other planets, or more likely the moon, is probably 20+ years out but the chances of it happening are based on the return on investment . Unlike the Federal Government, businesses cannot afford to throw billions or trillions of dollars at a problem to just prove it can be done. As to commercial space travel to other planets, I doubt if we'll ever see it. No value in it for businesses. And travel beyond our solar system would take far longer than the human lifetime just to get to even relatively near stars or planets. Right now, it is impossible.

Within the next 4 or 5 years! But only sub orbit. Type 'Virgin Galactic' into your search engine for more info. I also hope you are rich (I wish I was) it will cost around $100,000 for a ticket but if you are rich then enjoy the view and weightlessness - at least for several minuets...

Give it another 50-100 years, but by commonplace I mean only the super-upper class can afford it. I do think their has been 1 space tourist so far, someone that payed millions for a week in space in orbit. I guarantee in the next 500 years the middle class might be able to afford it.
