Am I crazy to want to be a commercial waterman? |
Specifically clams for right now. The start up cost is minimal and the money's ok. *some folks are making $200 a day* Everyone I know keeps telling me how hard the work is. *like crawling a round crawl space basements installing hvac crap isn't hard work?* I've clammed before and it's not that bad. Plus, you don't have to deal with anybody giving you crap at work. I grew up in a place, where you made your living as a waterman or a farmer.I do not think it is crazy to do what you enjoy.I have a lot of respect for those who are able to do it and even more for those who love and appreciate it.It is a tradition and a honest living. No, you're not crazy. If it's something that you truly enjoy, then go for it!! Money matters to a certain extent but satisfaction/happiness that one gets sometimes outweighs anything else.I find this philosophy quote by Confucius to be so true: GO FOR IT!! It's honest but hard work. If you enjoy it you have the jump on 99% of the other folks who wouldn't take the chance..You may never be rich, and the work is seasonal, but you obviously will be HAPPIER!..Good Luck! You do what you want to do. My friend is a "Long liner" my son is a "captain" I love the water but am disabled. Good luck no get yourself in there if its what you want to do Go for it man! It isnt bad at all. When its all said and done, you just have to do what makes you happy or what your passionate about...mine's fishing! Crazy? not at all! I will tell you as the others here have said,go for it if you have the opportunity & means to do so.Any passion for something is worth seeking imo.Whether it proves to be lucrative or not for you,the experience alone would be worth it.It would be crazy if you didn't go for it. I'm sure you will find as with any kind of work there is always someone out there to try to give you a hard time. If it's not the DNR, it's PETA or some other wacky group. You have to do what works for you. Anything worth doing requires work. It's the satisfaction that you get monetarily and emotionally that matters. Not necessarily in that order. |
