A Backhoe weighting 8 tons is on top of a flat-bed trailer and heading west on a highway / roadway.?

The extended shovel arm is made of hardened refined steel and the approaching overpass is made of commercial-grade concrete, reinforced with 1 1/2 inch steel rebar spaced at 6 inch intervals in a crisscross pattern layered at 1 foot spacing. Solve: When the shovel arm strikes the overpass, what is the velocity of the vehicle (how fast is it travelling) to slice the bridge in half? (Assume no effect for headwind and no braking by the driver.) Extra Credit: Solve for the time and distance required for the entire rig to come to a complete stop after hitting the overpass at the speed calculated above.

as a truck driver i can assure you that this is impossible as there is not a truck that can move the trailer fast enough to completely sever the overpass as the tires would first fail, then the trailer would break apart. the stop would be in less than 8 seconds as the baskhoe would then be blocking the traffic flow west bound underneath the overpass.

Speed: 86.73 mph
Distance and Time: Distance traveled will be equal to the FPS (feet per second) that the mass (truck) travels during the time it takes the driver to hang up his cell phone.

I know this one...

WHO CARES?聽 The trucking company just bought themselves a bridge!

BTW:聽 The damage in the pics which came with that question is from the backhoe arm piercing the bridge from below and wedging itself up.聽 Most of the damage up to the hole is a relatively minor scrape and came nowhere near cutting the bridge in two.聽 There's also the impact damage from the bucket hitting the bridge, which threw up the arm and started the whole chain of events.

Note to Robert E:聽 The trailer's wheels DID fail and the trailer DID break!
